Vegan South / East Africa Safari Tours.
Ryan climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with a vegan meal plan December 2021:
“I don’t have other photos of the food, but I can attest that my meals were so substantial that I ended up having a massive surplus of food and snacks that I brought for myself for the hike.
I just couldn’t keep up with the amount of quality food that was being provided to me on a regular basis….climb Mount Kilimanjaro with a vegan meal plan “

What activities do vegan traveler’s prefer?
What does a vegan traveler want when they travel is the better questions as there are so many different ways of arrival at following a vegan lifestyle.
Essentially the vegan traveler is just like any other traveler, they want to experience this world.
They may eat differently however like everyone else they want to experience the iconic, the urban, the rural, culture, local vegan culinary, scenery, the people of the country, that new adventure of sights, smells, sounds of the new places they are experiencing.
However what vegan’s do activity/tour wise differs widely as eating vegan is a personal choice and it does not have conditional preset principles of activities that everyone has to adhere to and follow to be regarded as vegan.
Some come to the vegan lifestyle via
- Compassion for animals,
- Others come to it through bad health,
- Others from the practice of a spiritual way of life,
- Others from a combination of all 3,
- Some from an inquisitiveness of what the vegan eating lifestyle is all about.
As an example going on a vegan tour of South Africa (or really any country that you visit) its the range of the activities that is the difference for the vegan traveler:
- Some may want to do a few great white shark caged dives ( you don’t need to be scuba certified) others wont.
- Some may want to visit animal shelters, other wont.
- Some may want to visit wildlife rehabilitation centers, others wont.
- Some may want to have food preparation classes in the tour, others are not interested in this activity.
- Some vegan travelers don’t drink wine so they are not interested in the Cape Winelands, others only drink vegan wine (which we can accommodate on a Cape Winelands tour) and other vegan travelers will drink anything.
- Some vegan travelers may want to visit the rural village area, maybe take a guided walk down the wild coast eating basic vegan meals, others will stick to the urban centers where you have more food choices.
The common denominator is the vegan meals whether you are in the city, the rural areas on a cultural tour and or on safari which we will ensure these are taken care of.
Traveling vegan in South Africa.
To say that there has been explosion of vegan cuisine options in Cape Town South Africa would be an understatement.
Cape Town has always been a foodie culinary center and with the growth of vegan/plant based eating Cape Town has seen a increase in
- Vegan restaurants
- Vegan bakeries.
- A dedicated vegan food market
- So man many vegan options abound in other restaurants, markets, bakeries, smoothie bars etc.
In the major urban centers South Africa has many restaurant options along with boutique hotels that offer plant based vegan meals.
Adding in the awesome farmers/food markets that are spread across the country, some are dedicated vegan markets while others will have a broad range of vegan options.
A fast food vegan restaurant in Cape Town-lekker is a local word for nice.
In the biggest food market in Cape Town for example there is a stand with at least 8 to 14 different vegan sweet tooth options. Ask me where it is located.
The same pattern of being able to access vegan meals is happening in most South Africa safari lodges/camps.
This holds true for the greater Southern Africa safari circuit for whether it be a Botswana Safari, a Zambia Safari or a Zimbabwe safari.
Its holds true for a Veg East Africa safari as well or in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with a fully supported vegan meal plan.
Its true that for some places ie the more remote independent type safari property or rural villages on a cultural tour the vegan meal maybe simple and basic. However even those meals will easily suffice for the 2N or 3N that you are safari.

Vegan South Africa safari tour tips:
1) No hotel or safari lodge will charge you extra for plant based based foods. If they do there are many other options and please let me know so I can educate the owners/mangers about how to attract customers.
2) There are plenty of restaurants, farmers/culinary markets in the urban and in some in the rural areas, some of which are dedicated vegan markets.
3) No need for supplements while on safari due to “lack of protein” unless you are taking them all ready.
4) Snacks while travelling are a personal choice. Since you are in a foreign country there are plenty of health food stores/bakeries to stock up on local goodies.
5) While on safari most safari vehicles have bottled water.
6) Upon arrival at your safari lodge/camp take a moment to check in with the manager or chef that they know about your pre reserved vegan meals.
7) While we have given examples of specific vegan lodges or beach resorts everyone travels with their own wish list of what to see and personal travel budget.
I have been a veg for 45 years and have been eating vegan food in safari lodges long before this current rise in vegan/plant based food.

Q: What is a Vegan Africa safari ?
A: Vegan travelers on a Africa safari want to experience the magnificence of the Africa wildlife and have their eating preferences catered for.
The word safari means journey in Swahili, it implies a range of activities.
Whether it be the early wake call sometimes to the sound of the African drum, snacks while on Safari game drives, lunch, the evening meal possibly with vegan wine, its all available on a custom designed Vegan Africa Safari.
In many cases most hotels/safari lodges or camps simply cater for the vegan traveler. Catering is a very impersonal service..one does the least to make it look like the most.
Accommodating the vegan traveler is a different thing…here the vegan traveler wishes or needs are treated just like any other traveler.
This is what we shrive to achieve with our custom design vegan safari and tour services…that the vegan traveler is given the attention they deserve.
