Dyer Island is a must for bird enthusiasts as it is home to some 8 000 African penguins and 120 000 Cape cormorants, as well as many other coastal species such as terns, African black oystercatchers, skuas and petrels.
Just off Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, with its colony of 60 000 Cape fur seals. From the boat, watch these intelligent, curious animals fish and play – ever watchful however of Great White sharks, prolific in a channel off Geyser Rock, aptly named Shark Alley.
On the return cruise to Hermanus there may well be abundant sightings of Southern Right Whales. From June to November, these giants make this town one of the world’s top whale-watching destinations, with whales approaching very close to the shore to mate and calve.
There are excellent whale-watching vantage points from cliff-side paths in the town itself, where we lunch, then browse local craft markets, before heading homewards to Cape Town via the spectacular Marine Drive, which follows the rocky coastline past the villages of Betty’s Bay, Rooiels and Pringle Bay.
09:00 You will be collected from The Portswood and taken on a private City Tour excluding Table Mountain.
Drive through the city via Bo-Kaap, or Cape Malay Quarter (so named for those peoples exiled to the Cape from Dutch colonies in the East). Leave our vehicles for a historical walk through the Company Gardens, the original fresh produce garden for visiting ships and locals from the mid 17th Century and today, home to the SA Museum, Cultural History Museum, Houses of Parliament, National Gallery and St George’s Cathedral.
Stroll through the city to Greenmarket Square to browse African mementos at its bustling market stalls. Drive to the Castle, the oldest building in South Africa with its collection of Old Cape paintings and take in the Grand Parade where Nelson Mandela addressed the nation on his release in 1990.
Move on to the District Six Museum to view a moving collection of stories, pictures and memorabilia highlighting the colourful life of this suburb which now stands empty, thanks to the destruction of homes and forced removal of residents during the height of the Apartheid era.
Following the City Tour, you will be stopping for lunch enroute. Guests to settle lunch direct as this is not included in the tour. Thereafter you will be taken on your private Winelands Tour including cheese and chocolate tasting.
Depart the city and head towards the Boland area – home to the celebrated Cape Winelands, with a first stop at the Zevenwacht Wine Estate to enjoy a cheese and wine tasting. Continue on along the picturesque Polkadraai road, with its many farms and estates set amidst breathtaking views of the Simonsberg, Stellenboschberg and Helderberg Mountains.
The area is rightly famous for high quality dry white and red wines from noble grape varieties. Award winning wines are produced at many historic estates in the area, some of which have homesteads dating back to the 17/18th centuries.
We visit some of these farms to taste their wines. There’s also a visit to oak-lined Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second oldest town, with a chance to explore the town’s beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture, its university, shops and galleries.
