Lower Zambezi National Park
Location/About:
With the Lower Zambezi National Park being relatively undeveloped, it’s main drawcard is it being in this wilderness state.
While the diversity of animals is not as large as the other parks, the opportunities to get close to game that move in and out of the Zambezi river channels is a major reason to visitt his park.
The Park lies opposite the famous Mana Pools Reserve in Zimbabwe, so the whole area on both sides of the Zambezi River is a massive wildlife sanctuary.
In the Lower Zambezi National Park most of the game is concentrated along the valley floor. There is an escarpment which is a long, steep slope, especially one at the edge of a plateau or separating areas of land at different heights. The mountain along the northern end acts as a physical barrier to most of the Park’s animal species.
The nighttime is about sitting under an incredibly black sky, dotted with countless stars, or step on board on a boat or drift silently pass the riverbank in a canoe for the best wildlife viewing, since most wildlife is concentrated around the Lower Zambezi Valley and the river.
Enormous herds of elephant, some up to 100 strong, are often seen at the river’s edge as well as Island hopping buffalo and waterbuck are common.
The Lower Zambezi National Park hosts good populations of hippo, leopard, lion, buffalo, and with over 400 bird species – they all gather in this mesmerizing wilderness.
Best time to visit:
The best time is mid season from June to September. Many lodges close in the rainy season however all lodges and canoeing operators are open from April to November.
